SGA Cabinet Position Descriptions


Executive Branch

Chief of Staff

  • Responsible for overseeing/managing all of Cabinet and its members

  • Will keep inventory of everything within SGA storage (the Cage) and the SGA office

  • Should be knowledgeable of all inner-workings of SGA (especially Cabinet)

  • Should be available to answer any Cabinet-related questions in the absence of the President

  • Must devote a significant amount of time to SGA on a weekly basis

  • Will report directly to the President

Deputy Chief of Staff

  • Will help the Chief of Staff in preforming a variety of task

  • Will help in an administrative role and meeting room bookings.

  • Will work in close collaboration with the Chief of Staff in filling in where needed.


Events/Programming Branch

Executive Director of Events

  • Responsible for overseeing all events hosted by Cabinet

  • Will hold regular meetings with all Event Directors to guide and assist in the planning of events

  • Will explain and answer questions regarding the contract for Event Directors

  • Should have experience with event planning and prior knowledge of SGA events

  • Will report directly to the Chief of Staff and President

The Miss USM Pageant

  • Responsible for the planning, fundraising, promotion, and execution of the Miss USM Pageant

  • Will host Miss USM Pageant contestant interest meetings, practices, rehearsals, and pre- pageant events

  • Will support the 2020-2021 Miss USM throughout her reign and competition at the 2021 Miss Mississippi Pageant

Homecoming

  • Responsible for planning, promoting, and executing all Homecoming events including week long programs and activities, philanthropy events, promotion events, and game-day events

  • Will work with the Alumni Association throughout the Homecoming planning process

  • Will assist the Parade and Court Directors

  • Must be available to communicate during the summer to plan Homecoming

Homecoming Parade

  • Responsible for organizing and planning the Homecoming Parade

  • Will work with campus and city officials to coordinate the parade

  • Will contact community organizations and businesses to encourage involvement in the parade

  • Will work with student organization teams to organize floats and schedule volunteers for the parade

  • Must be available to communicate during the summer of 2018 to plan Homecoming

Homecoming Court

  • Responsible for planning, promoting, and executing all Homecoming Court activities

  • Will meet with the Court regularly between the election and the Homecoming game-day to communicate information

  • Will coordinate Court appearances (i.e. Friday Night at the Fountain) and Court photographs

  • Will host the game-day reception in which the Court is recognized

  • Must be available to communicate during the summer to plan Homecoming

Lighting the Way

  • Responsible for planning, fundraising, promoting, and executing Lighting the Way for the Holidays at Southern Miss

  • Will work with the Alumni Association, community groups, businesses, and the City of Hattiesburg to host the annual holiday celebration

The Big Event

  • Responsible for planning, promoting, and executing The Big Event

  • Will work with the Director of Outreach to communicate with city and campus organizations and businesses

  • Will secure job sites, recruit volunteers, coordinate teams, and organize supplies


Student Initiatives Branch

Executive Director of Student Initiatives

  • Responsible for overseeing all Student Initiatives Directors and programs

  • Will hold regular meetings with all Student Initiatives Directors

  • Will explain and answer questions regarding the contract for Student Initiatives Directors

  • Should have experience with student initiatives and prior knowledge of SGA programs

  • Will report directly to the Chief of Staff and President

It’s On Us

  • Responsible for planning, promoting, and executing It’s On Us week and related events

  • Will work with the Cabinet Communications Branch to promote It’s On Us events

  • Will work with the Director of Health and Wellness to plan and execute events

  • Will aim to increase campus awareness of sexual assault

Diversity

  • Serves as a student body representative in diversity affairs regarding faculty, staff, and students

  • Will work with multicultural organizations, the University Diversity Committee, The Office of Multicultural Services, and all branches of SGA to promote diversity and inclusivity on campus and within SGA

Health and Wellness

  • Responsible for planning, promoting, and executing Mental Health Awareness Week

  • Will create various programs and initiatives throughout the term to increase campus awareness about health-related issues

  • Will work with campus health-related services including but not limited to Student Counseling Services and Student Health Services 

  • Will work to promote campus safety through promoting and programming

  • Will work closely with administrative efforts on improving campus safety.

Varsity

  • Responsible for coordinating and publicizing opportunities for all students to get involved with SGA through Varsity

  • Varsity is a platform on SGA that allows all students (regardless of qualifications, SGA experience, or GPA) to volunteer with SGA events and initiatives, letting more students serve on and learn about SGA

  • Will work with Cabinet Directors and SGA Executive Officers to create and announce volunteer opportunities for students

  • Will work with the Cabinet Communications Branch to publicize Varsity involvement opportunities for all students

  • Will coordinate training sessions for Varsity volunteers prior to the events or initiatives in which they will serve

  • Will assist with branding Varsity

  • Must be available to communicate over the summer of 2020 to work on Varsity 

  • Responsible for fostering relationships and improving the line of communication between SGA and members of the Southern Miss community

  • Will work with the Academic Affairs Director to communicate with students, collect feedback, plan programs, and aim to resolve campus issues

Election Commission

  • Election Commission plans and executes all SGA elections, including Homecoming elections, SGA officer and Senate elections.

  • The Election Commission enforces and upholds the election code throughout the election season and will keep students informed on the results of the elections. 

  • They also work with the community to improve voter registration.


Freshman Associates Branch

Executive Director of Freshman Associates

  • Responsible for overseeing members and Co-Directors within SGA Freshman Associates

  • Will hold regular meetings with FA Co-Directors to ensure they are promoting leadership development and strong retention for freshmen within FA

  • Will explain and answer questions regarding the contract for FA Co-Directors

  • Will assist with selecting freshmen to serve within FA

  • Will assist with planning the FA retreat

  • Will ensure members of FA are attending office hours and regular FA meetings

  • Will foster positive relationships between members of FA and SGA leaders

  • Will report directly to the Chief of Staff and President

  • Must be available to communicate over the summer of 2020 to prepare for FA

Freshman Associates Co-Directors

  • Responsible for serving as mentors and role-models to members of Freshman Associates

  • Will cultivate leadership development within members of FA, ensuring they have the tools and experiences necessary to prepare them for serving as future campus leaders

  • Will teach members of FA about all branches of SGA and Southern Miss, finding opportunities to gain experience with SGA leadership

  • Will help members of FA coordinate a program that will teach them event-planning, outreach, marketing, time management, and communication skill

  • Will assist with selecting freshmen to serve within FA

  • Must be available to communicate over the summer of 2020 to prepare for FA
